Types
All Digimon species are given a type, the type generally describes the Digimon's physical appearance. For example Garurumon is a beast type Digimon and if you know what he looks like i think you will agree that he is bestial being a wolf like Digimon. Where as Gabumon his lower digivolution level is a reptile type Digimon, though he kinda looks like Garurumon with his fur coat he is in fact a reptile Digimon like Agumon which can be seen in all his features aside his fur coat. Some types, such as "Demon Man Type" Digimon, include numerous Digimon, whilst other Digimon, such as "AncientGarurumon" is unique and belongs to him alone. A Digimon species is generally classified into only one "type". It should also be noted that some Digimon groups like "The Royal Knights" are all under one type group aka Exalted Knights.
Attributes
All Digimon species are classified into three attributes which have a Rock, Paper, Scissors arrangement.
Virus > Data > Vaccine > Virus
So a Virus attributed Digimon will have an advantage over a data attributed Digimon but it is only an advantage in most cases it is the most powerful and experienced Digimon that wins the fight regardless of attribute.
There are also two other attributes, Variable and Unknown.
Variable is for the most part exclusive to Hybrid type digimon, a Variable attributed Digimon adapts to it's enemy attributed Digimon. So they always have the advantage over their opponent unless they are facing an Unknown Attributed Digimon. *This part is my own take on this*
Because Unknown attributed Digimon have no known attribute they are therefore never disadvantaged, and there by giving them an advantage over Variable attributed Digimon who cannot identify the attribute of the Unknown attributed Digimon to even begin to adapt against it.
